I have upgraded to Windows 10 as of August 1. I have an Epson Stylus C88+ printer connected via the USB port on a Toshiba Satellite C-55A laptop. When I plugged the printer into the port, W10 attempted to install the driver.
It found a generic 'USB Printer,' but could not go further. This generic USB printer shows up in the Devices and Printers, but does not show up in the printer list of programs I use, like Word Perfect, Corel Draw, and all others.
The Windows compatibility site lists the printer as compatible. Epson's site says the drive is installed automatically. I can find no way to install the driver manually. This printer works fine under Windows 7.

Thank you for any help you can provide. Stephen Lowens Alameda, CA. Hi Stephen, Thank you for using Windows 10. I would suggest you to try uninstalling and re-installing the printer drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps. Try the below mentioned steps:.
Go to your manufacturer’s website and download the Driver setup file for your computer. Press Windows Key + R on your desktop screen to go to run box. Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter. Look for the Drivers, expand, then right click and select Uninstall.
If you are prompted to Confirm, then Confirm. Go to the location where you had saved your downloaded setup files of the drivers and right click, then select Properties. Select Compatibility Tab. Place a check mark next to Run this program in Compatibility mode and select the operating system accordingly from the drop down list. Let the driver to install and then check the functionality.

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I have not yet been successful. The newest driver for the Epson C88+ printer that can be installed manually is a Windows XP version.
I downloaded it as suggested, did the compatibility mode adjustment, and tried to install the driver. After several various tries, I found the C88+ had been installed in 'other devices.' Peering into the various properties, I found one note that said it required further installation, and another note saying it did not have a digital signature. I continue to have a generic 'USB Printer' shown in the list of printers in the 'Devices and Printers' list, even though I removed it once. I do not claim to be an IT specialist, but I've been messing with PC's since they came out in 1981.
If the Windows 10 Support chart says that Windows 10 supports this printer, and if Epson says this printer is included in Windows 10 and the driver should load automatically, is it not reasonable to suggest that there is some kind of bug way deep inside Windows that is preventing it from carrying the process to completion? I would appreciate further investigation, particularly since it appears that Microsoft did not intend to abandon this printer due to its age. Stephen Lowens. I contacted Epson by e-mail, and they sent the following reply. I followed their steps, which leads to installing the driver manually, and it worked! I am most grateful to Epson support for this. One detail that differs from Epson's instructions below is that you need to make the choice to 'Add a local or network printer manually.'
Then, you select the printer (C88 or whatever), let Windows Update get the current version (This does take several minutes even with DSL) and then complete the process as instructed. Stephen Lowens Alameda, CA. Hello, I also just had this occur - after upgrading to windows 10 from windows 7 on my acer laptop, and have realized the problem/solution in my case: when going thru the set-up screens to add the printer, the default selection in the list of ports chose the printer cable connection (LPT1) - I guess I assumed it would be the best choice, so did not search the list for a better option. Got the error message, laptop would not communicate with the printer. I then realized my C88+ is connected via USB-1, which is way down the list.
Once I selected that, and completed the remaining screens, all works perfectly. Might also want to be sure 'sharing' is not selected- I assume the C88 is always a wired set-up, not wifi, because that is true of mine. So would not be 'sharable' anyway. Hope this helps someone.
